World · Party knowledge through Day 27

Revelations & Relations

What the party has learned, what it suspects, and where it stands with the peoples and powers encountered along the road.

Confirmed

Directly learned

Seen, demonstrated or stated clearly during an encounter.

Strong indication

Evidence points here

A supported conclusion that the party has not yet proved.

Unresolved

Still unknown

A live question preserved without turning theory into fact.

DIVINE SILENCE

The Missing Gods

Confirmed

The Celestial Watcher warned that the old gods no longer listened, while older and hungrier powers might answer careless prayer.

The trapped High Priest of Semuanyae supplied physical evidence that divine absence has disrupted death itself: without his god, he could not complete his passage and remained bound to the ziggurat.

Laogzed’s avatar gave a more precise account of its own god. It said that 142 years earlier Laogzed fed with immense hunger, called the faithful to consume more in his praise, and then entered hibernation. Full divine powers continued briefly before ceasing; only lesser powers granted through avatars remained for a time.

Laogzed never returned from hibernation. Even the avatar no longer knew the location of the Great Cave where the god slept, and described its innate bond with him as broken. This dates Laogzed’s disappearance; it does not prove that every god vanished on the same day or in the same way.

Strong indication

The gods may be absent, fragmented or unreachable rather than wholly destroyed. Avatars, marks, sacred places and divine-linked relics still function in limited ways.

DIVINE ESSENCE

The Coloured Gems

Confirmed

The red gem contains or channels essence connected to Thardar, the dwarven nature god. Karl and the party entered it through a shared prayer circle, and Karl became attuned to it.

The gems hold finite charges or reserves and differ greatly in capacity. The red gem was recorded as the weakest known example, with thirteen remaining charges and a power ceiling measured at 4,000 gp under the old magical valuation system. Two grey gems had been exhausted. The orange gem had become an invisibility-linked object.

The green gem fitted to Toby’s bow is separate from the more powerful lime-green disease gem recovered from the rat-ogre laboratory. The table initially confused the two, then explicitly distinguished them. The lime-green gem was recorded with eighty-six charges, later eighty-three after three were used, and remained deliberately unexplored because its wider power and consequences were not understood.

The party also learned that gem essence is transferable, although the method, limits and risks remain largely unknown.

Strong indication

At least some coloured gems preserve fragments, reserves or crystallised traces of divine power left behind after the gods fell silent.

Unresolved

Whether every gem contains a god-fragment, whether depleted gems can recover, and who made or scattered them remain unknown.

Review the recovered gems →

THE WANING

Where the Magic Went

Confirmed

Divine answers weakened and ceased. Arcane casters gradually lost access to greater workings and eventually could learn no new spells. Potions, charged objects and lesser enchantments failed before most permanent magic.

Magic has not vanished absolutely. Powerful artefacts, divine-linked gems, surviving avatars, demiplanes, portals, elementals and ancient constructs still preserve or consume supernatural power.

Strong indication

Magic may have become trapped in remnants rather than erased: gems, beings, sealed places and surviving mechanisms behave like isolated reservoirs after the wider current failed.

Unresolved

No cause has been proved. The barbarian invasions, witch hunters, sealed towers and divine silence overlap in history, but their connection remains uncertain.

WORKING THEORY

Essence, Power and Cost

Confirmed

Blood-elemental essence can power alchemical or enchanting work. At Laogzed’s shrine, elemental blood had also been used to animate brass guardians and could strengthen the diminished avatar enough to act.

Prayer, attunement, sacrifice and stored charges can still produce effects, but each surviving source has limits and consequences.

Strong indication

Different remnants may preserve different forms of lost power: divine essence in gems, planar essence in elementals, commands in constructs, and diminished agency in avatars.

Unresolved

The party does not yet know whether these remnants can restore the world’s magic, only sustain isolated effects, or risk feeding the powers that answered after the gods became silent.

Knowledge held by the party

Revelations by Character

These assignments identify the character best equipped to understand or apply each discovery. They do not prevent the rest of the party from knowing what was shared.

ARCANE SPECIALIST · ASURAN

Essence, Items and Death Lore

Confirmed knowledge
  • Arcane magic: the world’s wider magical current has failed, but power remains inside artefacts, coloured gems, extraplanar beings, active portals, demiplanes, wards and ancient constructs.
  • Magic items: an item’s old gold-piece valuation describes the amount and complexity of magic it can sustain rather than its usefulness as currency. The red gem’s present capacity is roughly 4,000 gp.
  • Gem applications: divine essence inside a gem can be shaped towards weapons, armour, divine effects, arcane effects, jewellery or other classes of magic item. Attuning first to a bearer and then to an item type should make later changes easier.
  • Changing a gem: gem power is malleable, but each alteration can consume part of its finite essence. Creating a new function may be easier than removing an existing one. Entering a gem repeatedly becomes progressively harder and causes severe fatigue.
  • Known stones: the red gem holds Thardar’s essence, thirteen recorded charges and a dwarven-door sense using about half its current capacity. The orange gem is linked to invisibility. The lime-green disease gem from the rat-ogre laboratory is separate from the green bow gem. Two grey stones are exhausted.
  • Alchemy and extraction: acid can free a gem-set item without shattering it. Blood-elemental essence is an exceptionally powerful enchanting and alchemical ingredient; even the imperfect sample was provisionally valued at 73,000 gp.
  • Arcane mechanisms: blood can temporarily animate constructs, restore dormant wards and supply power to old portal machinery. Gem sockets can govern or energise planar gates.
  • Death gods and souls: death gods and their avatars normally guide souls onward. Semuanyae’s absence left a dead priest stranded, while the Negative Material Plane and wraith encounters show that death-energy can drain age, life and physical substance without every affected being becoming undead.
Asuran’s assumptions
  • The decline did not erase magic; it broke or drained the system that once distributed it, leaving isolated reservoirs.
  • Different gems may contain different divine essences and may be capable of many applications, but it is not yet proved that every coloured gem contains a god-fragment.
  • Attunement should reduce danger and resistance, not make experimentation safe or prevent a gem from being exhausted.
  • Planar leakage may be keeping ancient wards, portals and creatures active after ordinary spellcasting failed.
Still unresolved

Who created the gems, whether spent essence can be restored, whether divine and arcane attunements can safely coexist within one gem, and whether the remnants could restart magic across the wider world.

DIVINE SPECIALIST · KARL

Prayer, Gods and Avatars

Confirmed knowledge
  • Dangerous prayer: the familiar gods do not answer normally. Calling blindly for divine aid can attract older or hungrier powers, as the Celestial Watcher warned.
  • Limited divine effects remain: Karl has produced revealing light, opposed wraiths, cured the infected water-passage creature and learned protection against evil despite the general divine silence.
  • Prayer circles: several worshippers praying to the same power can enter a divine-linked gem more safely than one person forcing entry alone.
  • Thardar: correct invocation of the god whose essence lies within the red gem allowed the party to be accepted into it and enabled Karl’s attunement.
  • Avatars: avatars can retain limited agency and grant lesser powers even when severed from their gods. Information is among the easiest gifts an avatar can still provide.
  • Funerary rites: reconstructed observance and reverence helped release Semuanyae’s dead priest even though the missing death god did not arrive to escort him.
  • Separate chronologies: Laogzed entered hibernation 142 years ago, whereas the public decline of divine contact occurred later. One god’s disappearance cannot automatically date every other god’s loss.
Karl’s assumptions
  • Prayer directed through a known avatar, mark or divine essence is safer and more precise than calling directly into the silence.
  • Faith, correct identity and purpose affect whether stored divine power accepts or rejects a petitioner.
  • The continued success of minor divine acts suggests that access has narrowed rather than disappeared absolutely.
Still unresolved

Whether any full god can still answer, what now hears unaimed prayer, and whether avatar-granted power ultimately consumes a finite reserve.

NATURE & PLANAR OBSERVER · TOBY

Creatures, Tracks and Other Worlds

Confirmed knowledge
  • Primordial environments: prehistoric water, impossible swamp life and ancient nature shrines show that preserved pieces of older worlds survive beside or beneath the present one.
  • Corrupted nature: disease can taint a shrine, its blessing and the creatures around it. Cleansing the physical infestation can also break the supernatural corruption.
  • Extraplanar creatures: elementals belong to other planes and should not normally remain trapped on the Prime Material Plane. The blood elementals were displaced beings, not stores of inert material.
  • Negative portal: the temple portal opened through the Negative Material Plane, a route lethally hostile to ordinary living travellers. The living blood elemental nevertheless passed through after the avatar restored the gate.
  • Dragon-ogre tracks: the creature reached the excavation entrance but did not descend. Its purpose, allegiance and present location remain unknown.
  • Survival evidence: tracks, drag marks, cargo and camp conditions can distinguish what the barbarians did from what their constructs or larger companions probably did.
Toby’s assumptions
  • The primeval swamp and its water may be a preserved planar overlap rather than an ordinary cavern ecosystem.
  • The dragon-ogre may have guarded, delivered or observed the expedition, but the tracks alone do not establish a relationship.
  • The blood elemental’s successful passage does not prove the Negative Material Plane was its home; the portal may have been only part of its route.
Source caution

Kev was absent during part of Day 22 and the other players controlled Toby. Knowledge checks made through Toby in that session are recorded as party knowledge with Toby’s speciality noted, not treated as private decisions made by the character.

MARKED WITNESS · HALEN

Marks, Thresholds and the Body

Confirmed knowledge
  • Divine marks: Halen already bore Jergal’s mark when Laogzed’s avatar placed a second mark beside it. Asuran also bears the Mark of Jergal.
  • Duration: Laogzed’s mark was not assigned a fixed expiry in the archive; it could remain with Halen for months.
  • Calling through a mark: a mark provides a direct, limited link to an avatar. In desperate need its bearer may call for aid, although the nature and cost of the response cannot be predicted.
  • Death threshold: stepping onto the temple stair gave Halen a vision of ushering souls into the next life, directly connecting the place, his marks and the work normally performed by death powers.
  • Negative energy: wraith attacks aged and weakened him physically. Contact with death-energy can alter a living body without immediately killing or transforming it into undead.
  • Suspended champions: Laogzed’s champions and snake-priest were held at the edge of death. They were neither properly alive nor undead and could not awaken normally after magic failed.
  • Sacrifice and response: Halen’s ritual consumption helped complete the offering that awakened the diminished avatar and made communication possible.
Halen’s assumptions
  • Collecting or carrying several death-god marks may improve access to their avatars, but may also create competing claims or obligations.
  • The stair’s vision suggests Halen could be recognised as an usher or intermediary, but it does not prove that he has become a servant of any death god.
  • A mark is an invitation or channel, not proof of loyalty, protection or friendship.
Still unresolved

What either mark will demand, whether they can be refused or removed, and what happens if Halen invokes two avatars whose purposes conflict.

SHARED REVELATION

The Present State of Magic

Confirmed
  • Arcane casters gradually lost the power for greater workings and eventually the ability to learn new spells. Divine contact weakened into avatar-mediated lesser powers before falling silent.
  • Potions, charges and lesser enchantments failed before most permanent items. Exceptionally powerful artefacts and isolated magical systems survived.
  • Magic can still be stored, redirected or consumed. Known vessels include divine gems, elemental essence, blood sacrifice, avatars, constructs, wards, portals and demiplanes.
  • Old systems can reactivate when supplied with the right essence even though the world no longer provides sufficient ambient power.
  • Time and distance behave unpredictably around the Library and demiplanes; Days 15–21 passed strangely during the party’s successful Library visit.
Working model

Magic behaves less like a vanished substance than a broken network. The general current is gone or inaccessible, while sealed reservoirs and planar connections still hold usable power. Every surviving use draws on a source, consumes a reserve, opens a link or attracts an intelligence.

Unresolved

Whether these reservoirs are symptoms of the world’s decline, pieces of a repair, or bait left by the powers now listening.

SHARED REVELATION

The Current World Order

Confirmed
  • The old temples: established faiths have lost reliable contact with their gods. Priests, souls and sacred sites have been left without the divine order that once sustained them.
  • The Order: a hidden organisation preserves magical training, knowledge and practical networks. Its watchtowers, agents and the Library route form part of a concealed counterculture.
  • Barbarian powers: related but not necessarily unified warbands raid surviving centres, excavate ancient sites and use inherited rites, blood and constructs they only partly understand.
  • New religions: violent cults and appetite-driven worship arose after the old gods receded. Gut Ripper’s expedition shows that these groups can reactivate forgotten divine machinery.
  • Witch hunters and law: belief in gods and magic has been outlawed in many lands. Open magical practice is therefore politically dangerous as well as technically difficult.
  • Isolated society: cities fractured, trade diminished and much of the population withdrew into rural settlements. Travellers and annual fayres now carry much of the commerce, news and recruitment between communities.
  • Restless dead: regions have been abandoned because ordinary people lack clerics and magical weapons capable of opposing incorporeal undead.
  • Older powers remain: Utabo, the unidentified titan, Ghaunadaur’s avatar, Laogzed’s avatar and the Celestial Watcher prove that the present human order is not the only power structure still operating.
Strong indications
  • The barbarian invasions, sealed towers, divine silence and collapse of magic overlap, but no common author or single cause has been proved.
  • Those controlling surviving magical reservoirs may become the new centres of political and religious power.
  • The Order’s preservation policy and the cults’ sacrificial methods represent opposing answers to the same scarcity.

Day 22 source review

New Revelations from the Frozen Temple

Facts taken from the session text, with uncertain outcomes kept separate from confirmed events.

THE DRAGON-OGRE

A Threat Still Outside

Confirmed

The party identified the tracks as those of a dragon-ogre: a four-legged creature combining an ogre’s strength with draconic armour and abilities. The survival evidence showed that it came only as far as the excavation entrance and did not descend into the tunnel.

Unresolved

Nothing established where it went, whether it was watching the excavation, or what relationship it had with Gut Ripper’s expedition.

THE SNAKE PRIEST

A Memory One Generation Removed

Confirmed

The aged reptilian priest was estimated to be roughly ninety years old—born shortly after magic disappeared. His teachers or parents could therefore have remembered the magical age directly and passed down the temple’s location and rites.

His notes helped lead the expedition to Laogzed’s shrine. He used blood-elemental power to animate the temple’s old constructs temporarily and may also have used it to extend his own life.

Confirmed

He placed himself among Laogzed’s preserved champions. He was not dead or undead, but held at the final edge of life in suspended animation.

BLOOD ELEMENTALS

Two Barrels, Two Different Fates

Confirmed

Blood elementals come from a rarely discussed demiplane of blood and should not normally remain on the Prime Material Plane. One specimen was already dead and beginning to decay; the other remained alive in magically induced suspended animation.

The dead specimen yielded a poorly extracted sample provisionally valued at 73,000 gp because of its extreme rarity and usefulness in alchemy and enchantment. The living specimen was treated as a magical creature to preserve and was returned through the opened portal.

Confirmed

The party fed the dead remains to the avatar, restored enough power to open the portal and returned the living elemental through it.

THE NEGATIVE PORTAL

A Door Without Enough Power

Confirmed

Planar knowledge identified the temple portal as opening onto the Negative Material Plane—a place no living being should enter. Its mechanism moved and the portal flickered, but the shrine lacked enough energy to open it fully.

Blood from the slain barbarians was drawn along the floor and stairway into the shrine. Further sacrifice progressively awakened the avatar’s eyes and heads and restored enough power for the portal mechanism to respond.

Unresolved

Why a blood elemental could safely use this route, whether the portal reached its true home, and what remained beyond the threshold were not established.

LAOGZED’S CHAMPIONS

Waiting Between Life and Death

Confirmed

The green forms fixed to the walls were ancient champions of Laogzed. Like the snake priest, they were preserved at the brink of death rather than made undead. In an age of working magic they were intended to awaken when the faith required something consumed or destroyed.

Strong indication

Their failure to awaken normally supports the wider pattern: old divine structures still retain purpose, but lack the magical power needed to fulfil it.

MARKS AND AVATARS

Limited Links Still Work

Confirmed

Halen learned that a divine mark could serve as a limited direct link to an avatar. In a moment of desperate need, touching or invoking the mark might call whatever aid that avatar could still provide. The exact form of aid could not be predicted.

Halen already carried the Mark of Jergal, a mark also borne by Asuran. Laogzed’s avatar recognised Halen’s existing mark and placed its own beside it. The new mark could remain with Halen for months. Together, the marks demonstrate that diminished divine intermediaries can still establish personal links even while their gods remain unreachable.

Unresolved

What such contact costs, how much freedom the avatar retains, and whether accepting a mark changes the bearer beyond access to aid remain unknown.

PLANAR LEAKAGE

Magic Crossing the Boundaries

Strong indication

A recently discharged lightning ward should not have remained active for a century if it were only an ordinary spell. The party’s working explanation was that some magic still enters the world through links to other planes.

The unnatural cold beneath the excavation, surviving portals, demiplanes and stranded elementals all fit that explanation, but do not yet prove a single mechanism.

Unresolved

The exact source of the cold, the plane connected to the remaining carved symbols, and whether planar leakage can restore or merely imitate lost magic remain unknown.

SOURCE CAUTIONS

What the Transcript Does Not Settle

  • Kev was absent; the other players controlled Toby. Actions credited solely to Toby should therefore be treated cautiously.
  • The discussion distinguishes an ordinary green bow gem from the lime-green disease gem after initial confusion.
  • The 142-year account applies specifically to Laogzed and his avatars, not automatically to the disappearance of every god.
  • The portal was identified as a route through the Negative Material Plane, and the living elemental was successfully returned through it.
  • The snake priest’s use of blood to extend his life was presented as a strong inference rather than a witnessed fact.

Standing with the world

Relations Ledger

The standing below was established through Day 22. Later discoveries are grouped by day after this ledger.

Allies and Friends

  • The Order: allies, guides and custodians of surviving magical knowledge. The Order warned the party that barbarians lay ahead and provided a guide who led them by a circuitous route back to the surface. Its principle of preserving magic directly shaped the decision not to exploit the living blood elemental.
  • Gerlik: friendly rail-cart pilot and recurring practical ally in the dwarven tunnels.
  • Troglodytes of Semuanyae: initially dangerous, later connected to the rites and memory of their lost death god. Relations improved through the party’s actions at the shrine and ziggurat.
  • Sebastian: an Order member discovered in werefox form beneath a ruined cabin. His condition and future remain unresolved, but he is not treated as an enemy.

Uneasy or Transactional

  • Ratmen: fought beneath the Safehold, then spared by Halen after surrender. Their wider clan’s attitude remains unknown.
  • Remorhaz: permitted the rail-cart to pass after responding to Karl’s unexplained words; this was passage, not friendship.
  • Celestial Watcher: delivered a warning rather than aid. Its allegiance and limits are unknown.
  • Avatar of Laogzed: accepted the party’s offering, demanded ritual consumption and then offered a boon. The party chose knowledge about the missing god rather than a physical gift. The exchange was dangerous and transactional, not an alliance.
  • Living blood elemental: no communication or lasting relationship was established. The party nevertheless treated it as a magical being to preserve and devised a plan to return it through the reopened portal rather than harvest it.
  • Avatar of Ghaunadaur: expelled the party from the Library and left Asuran a symbol. The meaning of that act remains uncertain.

Hostile Powers

  • Barbarian warbands: recurring enemies tied to the fall of the Safehold and later northern excavations.
  • Gut Ripper’s followers: hostile worshippers using blood, sacrifice and Laogzed’s hidden shrine.
  • Beastman warband and druid: fought the party in the marsh and called the Purple Worm against them.
  • Drow handlers: used a chained basilisk in an ambush; both handlers were killed.
  • The black-armoured crusader commander: leader of the opening assault and still an unresolved enemy.

OPEN QUESTIONS

What the Party Still Needs to Learn

  • Where the gods went, and whether they can be reached or restored.
  • Who created the coloured gems and why their powers differ.
  • Whether divine essence is finite, recoverable or transferable.
  • Why some avatars and ancient mechanisms still function.
  • What now answers prayers when the familiar gods remain silent.
  • Whether the loss of magic and the barbarian invasions share a cause.
  • What the sealed towers, witch hunters and surviving Order records conceal.

Frozen sanctuary · Day 25

Faith, fragments and planar ice

Discoveries made after the party crossed into Telchur’s wounded realm.

REVELATION · DAY 25

Faith Can Preserve a Divine Charge

Karl’s correctly directed prayer to Thardar produced divine light without consuming the charge normally required.

REVELATION · DAY 25

Divine Shrapnel Alters Living Creatures

The winter wolf carried raw green essence embedded like shrapnel, supplying finite charges for supernatural cold, fog and mental influence. A later shard beside a dire polar bear’s eye produced disease, extreme pain, frenzy and unnatural endurance. The effect depends upon the creature and where the fragment strikes.

REVELATION · DAY 25

Extreme Conditions Become Portals

A weakened planar boundary can manifest as a phenomenon portal. Extreme cold carried the party into an ice demiplane.

REVELATION · DAY 25

Worship Predates Named Gods

Tanner reached a form of belief in which mortals worshipped the predator in the forest before divine powers possessed formal names.

REVELATION · DAY 25

A Demiplane Can Fold Back Upon Itself

Tracks and a stretched rope proved that the frozen demiplane was a closed, looping space. Travelling away from one point eventually returned the party to it from another direction.

REVELATION · DAY 25

Planar Snow Retains Magic

When Karl healed himself inside the ice demiplane, elemental snow supplied part of the spell’s power. Ambient magic survives within some planes even though the Prime Material world is depleted.

REVELATION · DAY 25

The Ice Demiplane Is Wounded

The realm is not a stable meeting of the Prime Material and elemental ice. Its conditions alternate, its dead outsiders slip away, and uncontrolled fractures permit travel in either direction.

REVELATION · DAY 25

Divine Shrapnel Came from Morgion

The green fragments are remains of Morgion’s diseased divine essence, scattered when part of the plague god was struck down in Telchur’s sanctuary. They can grant power while spreading corruption, disease and madness.

REVELATION · DAY 25

The Corrupted Beasts Were Not Servants

The winter wolf and dire polar bear belonged to the Frostfather’s realm. Morgion’s fragments infected and transformed them; their corruption does not make them willing servants of the plague god.

REVELATION · DAY 25

The Menhirs Were Summoned

Telchur’s champions and senior priests were instructed to bring their communities’ sacred stones to one sanctuary. The extraordinary gathering was deliberate preparation for a ritual, not a natural field of standing stones.

REVELATION · DAY 25

Named Gods Replaced Older Worship

Before temples and divine names, mortals worshipped powers such as winter, predation, sun, darkness and death directly. Tanner’s acceptance of the wolf offering touched this older form of belief.

REVELATION · DAY 25

A God Must Leave Before Returning

The champions believed a fallen god could return through renewed worship only after passing into the afterlife. A power that simply faded from memory might disappear without retaining that road back.

REVELATION · DAY 25

Protected Spaces Preserve Magic

The mammoth-hide lodge retained dimensional rooms, food, viewing and portal functions because its interior was insulated from the magic-starved world. The Headband of Conscious Effort survived for the same reason inside its preservation tube.

UNRESOLVED · DAY 25

The Lodge Recognised an Owner

The lodge awakened and altered itself as though responding to an owner, but the account never identifies that person. No party member should yet be recorded as its confirmed master.

After the sanctuary · Day 26

The moving fragments

REVELATION · DAYS 25–26

The Fragments Can Choose and Move

The first fragment removed by Asuran launched itself towards the silent sanctuary, entered Karl’s armour and began burrowing towards his body. After Asuran caught and extracted it with pliers, it redirected itself towards him. The shards therefore display purpose or instinct rather than behaving as inert crystal.

The party held five fragments by the end of Day 25. Three more emerged when the exhausted menhir crumbled after the return journey on Day 26, establishing a total of eight one-use vessels of Morgion’s divine essence.

Beneath the glacier · Day 27

Gods preserved in ice

The drowned valley led to evidence about divine sacrifice, gem-making, planar barriers and the powers still contained within Telchur’s glacier.

REVELATION · DAY 27

The Glacier Buried an Existing Valley

Confirmed

The Black Expanse is not confirmed as another plane. Its old wall, battlements, jetty and floodplain belonged to a surface valley engulfed by the advancing divine glacier. The moving ice displaced water and debris, leaving a salt-smelling drowned landscape beneath the frozen ceiling.

REVELATION · DAY 27

Telchur Built a Sanctuary, Not Merely a Glacier

Confirmed

Deep within the ice lies a deliberate refuge and containment complex. Eight concealed cells were identified: six held frozen magical creatures, one was empty and one held a living unicorn. A remorhaz was connected to the cells and supplied the intense cold used to maintain their preservation.

The sanctuary also retained a martial guardian, food and protected living space. This indicates planning for survival, custody and the preservation of magical life rather than uncontrolled winter alone.

REVELATION · DAY 27

Telchur Is Dead, but His Power Remains Active

Confirmed

Asuran discovered ice-coloured divine remains hidden within the sanctuary. The crystalline and bone-like forms were fused into the glacier itself rather than lying loose like ore or recoverable treasure. The party only observed them: nobody touched, cut free or removed any portion, and nothing from the site was added to the party’s possessions.

Strong indication

The later testimony of Telchur’s last priest confirmed the larger truth: the glacier is the god’s transformed body, and the crystalline divine spark within it still sustains a living, shifting internal world.

REVELATION · DAY 27

Thardar Chose Sacrifice Before the Waning

Witness testimony

Thardar’s unicorn said that the god willingly gave his life so his essence could be used after magic disappeared. Dwarven artificers transformed that essence into gems and were reportedly delighted by what they had achieved.

Thardar’s temples and clerics had already vanished long before the wider loss of magic. His disappearance was therefore an earlier, deliberate preparation rather than another immediate casualty of the Waning.

REVELATION · DAY 27

Thardar and Telchur Followed Similar but Separate Paths

Confirmed distinction

The party asked whether the gods had worked together to build a shared refuge. The unicorn rejected that conclusion: their purposes were different and Thardar was already gone before Telchur’s final work.

What links them is sacrifice. Both appear to have surrendered themselves so others, or their powers, could survive the loss of magic. The parallel does not prove an alliance.

REVELATION · DAY 27

Divine Gems Replace a Missing Source of Power

Confirmed

The yellow Thardar gem had allowed the unicorn to fuel its innate magical abilities without drawing upon its own life force. The unicorn later spent its power willingly to release Thardar’s essence back into the land.

This establishes that a divine gem is more than a passive relic: it can act as a finite substitute for vanished ambient or divine power. The yellow gem passed to Tanner retained a limited divine reserve that strengthened his natural presence and could make him exceptionally compelling or commanding when deliberately invoked.

REVELATION · DAY 27

Order Equipment Was Designed for Socketed Gems

Confirmed

The party’s cloaks, hoods, belts, gloves, boots, armour and selected weapons were made with prepared gem sockets. Correctly matching a gem to an old magical item pattern makes the first installation and later alterations easier.

Tanner is a skilled leatherworker and successfully secured the yellow gem in the clasp of his fur cloak. Once attuned, the old pattern shaped the gem’s power through the garment: Tanner’s confidence and authority became more forceful, while prayer could redirect part of its finite essence towards other divine purposes.

REVELATION · DAY 27

A Barrier Still Separates the Planes

Strong indication

The unicorn had remained associated with the glacier for more than a century while trying to carry out its purpose. Its testimony suggested resistance between planes: something was slowing or preventing passage to the intended destination.

This supports the wider evidence that planar routes still exist but are obstructed, weakened or selectively sealed rather than simply erased.

REVELATION · DAY 27

The Illithid Is the Sanctuary’s Most Knowledgeable Prisoner

Witness testimony

The Mind Flayer was held in its own storage area. The unicorn described it as lawful evil and the most knowledgeable creature within the glacier. It would honour the literal terms of an agreement and could offer valuable information, but would exploit any weakness in those terms.

Freedom from the glacier was the price it desired. Its telepathy, psychic domination and intelligence made even a conversation dangerous; the party chose not to seek a bargain that day.

REVELATION · DAY 27

Asuran Cannot Be Perceived Normally by the Unicorn

Confirmed phenomenon

The unicorn did not merely fail to see Asuran: it could not acknowledge that he existed, and removing him from the immediate area did not restore blocked memories about the god-slayer. The effect therefore exceeds ordinary invisibility.

Unresolved

Ghaunadaur’s mark and the god’s history of disappearing from existence provide a possible connection, but the session did not prove the cause.

REVELATION · DAY 27

The Bow Gem Is Not Dwarven Work

Confirmed

The green stone in the Bow of the Ancients is a crude attempt to imitate the dwarven divine-gem process. It contains an unnamed primordial force from before gods possessed familiar identities—something oppressive and basic rather than a recognised deity.

The bow once produced greater accuracy, additional attacks and petrification through its own magic. The gem now makes restoring those old functions easier by supplying power directly to the weapon.

REVELATION · DAY 27

The Green Bow Gem Can Petrify

Observed

Toby channelled the embedded gem through two arrows. Both struck ice trolls: one resisted, while the other became stone temporarily. The effect came from the bow’s gem rather than a separate poison, coating or limited collection of petrification doses.

REVELATION · DAY 27

Sea Gricks Hunt by Becoming Bait

Observed

The Sea Gricks attract aquatic predators, endure the attack, engulf the attacker and grow into larger forms. The much larger creature moving beneath the drowned valley remains unidentified.

REVELATION · DAY 27 CONTINUED

The Glacier Is Telchur’s White Corpse

Confirmed by the last priest

Telchur was slain by the forces of disease and transformed his dying divine body into the vast glacier. Its passages are not merely built inside ice: they are structures within a body that heals, shifts, remembers and dreams. Refugees and cold-adapted creatures survive as part of its internal ecology.

REVELATION · DAY 27 CONTINUED

The White Corpse Has Missed Its Destination

Confirmed

The body was meant to pass into the Summerlands. A planar obstruction stopped that passage while leaving it moving across the Prime Material, where it now destroys the countryside. Ordinary exits and teleportation sealed once the journey began.

REVELATION · DAY 27 CONTINUED

Rest Inside the Corpse Does Not Measure Time

Observed

The party believed it had slept twice although less than a day had passed. Apparent sleep may last only moments and does not guarantee that prayer, memory or divine gifts have renewed. The dreaming glacier can recognise attempts to force recovery.

REVELATION · DAY 27 CONTINUED

Invocation Shapes Neutral Gem Power

Observed

Asuran directed gem power through Ghaunadaur and became unreachable even to the unicorn and the illithid. The effect was not ordinary invisibility. The gem acted as a conduit; the invoked power determined the form of the result.

REVELATION · DAY 27 CONTINUED

The Illithid Offered a Mental Reserve

Partly confirmed

The prisoner claimed to have lived inside the glacier for roughly sixty to ninety years. It offered willing companions a tiny mental presence that could be consumed once as a second chance. Halen definitely accepted and expended it; no continuing domination was found afterward. The surviving account does not securely name every other recipient.

REVELATION · DAY 27 CONTINUED

Five Regions Lead to Telchur’s Heart

Confirmed by the Winter Knight

The internal road runs from the Mouth to the Refuge of the Forgotten, Crystal Labyrinth, Blood Veins and Heart. The first shard opens the passage from the Mouth to the Refuge, and further shards are expected to unlock the deeper thresholds.

The Winter Knight initially believed the completed set might form a divine focus or boon. The avatar’s later answer superseded that theory: the essence must be ritually released or redirected so the White Corpse can cross the planar barrier.

REVELATION · DAY 27 CONTINUED

Telchur Is Not Entirely Dead

Revealed through the avatar

At the edge of death Telchur transformed into the White Corpse. He remains faintly alive within it, still healing and dreaming. Removing his surviving essence carelessly could therefore finish what Morgion’s forces began.

Divine Essence Caused the Failed Crossing

Revealed through shared vision

The White Corpse attempted to pass toward the Summerlands, but Telchur’s remaining divinity could not cross the planar barrier. Cast back onto the mortal world, the glacier has spent roughly eighty-five years travelling physically across it while slowly breaking apart within.

Six Guardians Protect the Remaining Essence

Foreseen, locations unconfirmed

The company saw frozen worshippers guarded by wolves and a frost giant, a corrupted Elder Frost Elemental, an advanced Crystal Golem with ice mephits, sloughing remorhazes, an Ice Drake, and a mountain-sized crystal above an abyss with six orbiting moons. These are protected essence-sites, but the vision did not assign them to the five regions.

Raw Divine Essence Answers Communal Prayer

Tested with the first shard

A Shard of Telchur is a raw piece of the god rather than a protected dwarven gem. Shared prayer can direct it, while the scale, reach and duration of a request determine both the power consumed and the danger of failure. Telchur’s surviving nature answered through air, cold, chaos, storms, strength and winter.

The party considered light, protection, rest and travel before using the shard to recover knowledge lost during the Waning. Karl and Tanner regained access to a broad foundation of simple divine prayers. With the circle’s support, Asuran then recovered ten foundational arcane workings.

The second invocation succeeded but produced a violent recoil. The company had agreed to drive any backlash into the shard rather than let it strike everyone taking part. Karl, Tanner and Halen held the prayer together after Toby and Asuran were forced back, turning the surge into the raw fragment. That choice directly caused the discarded course of events in which the overburdened shard exploded.

Asuran’s Second Chance Saved Karl

Confirmed by the revised outcome

The first outcome of the shard-working was catastrophic. The crystal exploded, Karl took the full force of the blast, his armour was torn apart and he was left far beyond the reach of ordinary first aid. The rest of the company was also wounded and had only moments to save him.

Asuran spent the second chance granted by the imprisoned Mind Flayer. The event was returned to the moment before the explosion and played out differently: the shard did not burst, Karl was never injured and the crystal survived with six measures of power.

The gift carried a concealed price. Until used, it allowed the Mind Flayer to see and hear through Asuran. Spending it to prevent Karl’s death ended that connection and removed the illithid’s presence from his mind.

Asuran Was Displaced, Not Invisible

Clarified

Asuran’s earlier disappearance placed him in an adjacent planar state. He could still touch his companions, but the unicorn and the Mind Flayer could not perceive him. This explains why ordinary tests for invisibility failed.
